Biker families will want to participate in the Bike the Drive event at Chicago’s Grant Park May 28, and stay at the nearby and affordable Chicago Lake Shore Hotel!

Bike the Drive is a celebration of biking routes on Lake Shore Drive – with no cars! The ride is for all ages and levels of skill and fitness. New this year is a 30-mile trip option which takes participants north and south along the road. “Regular” routes are five-mile round trips, north or south.

Bike the Drive starts at 5:30 am, but you may not want to start then. It is suggested that you start at least by seven am to complete your ride before the LSD is reopened to car traffic. Part of the celebration includes a pancake breakfast for $10. You can eat before or after your excursion!

What if your bike breaks down? There will be mechanics onsite to repair tires and do safety checks. There will be a charge for parts only, should your bike require them. You may register ahead of time or on the day of the event. Race packets will offer complete details about the routes. Volunteers will be at checkpoints along the way, offering liquids and physical support. All riders must wear helmets.

Grant Park is located at 337 East Randolph Street just east of the Loop. For information and to register in advance, go online to http://bikethedrive.org/ Bikers registering after May 15 must pick up their packets in person.

Make your Bike the Drive experience more enjoyable by staying at the Chicago Lake Shore Hotel, in historic Hyde Park. (If you bike the south route, you’ll pass by the hotel.) Chicago Lake Shore offers free shuttle bus service to and from the Loop area and is close to bus and train services. The Lake Shore Café offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. AND Jazz and seafood buffet (non-seafood items available) Friday nights.
